Smart Herd Monitoring for Healthy Cows and Better Profitability

The Pfaffenbichler/Felberbauer farm in Lower Austria is a family-run dairy farm with around 40 dairy cows and young female stock. Nestled in the gentle hilly landscape of the region, the farm combines traditional agriculture with modern management methods.

Special emphasis is placed on animal health, a calm barn environment, and careful herd management. Part of the milk produced on the farm is processed into various types of cheese and then marketed within the region. This creates a close connection with consumers while also supporting regional value creation and short transport routes.

The farm is an excellent example of sustainable and future-oriented agriculture that successfully combines tradition and innovation.

Fertility Management Made Easy

The demands placed on us farmers are constantly increasing. New regulations, extensive documentation requirements, rising cost pressure, and an overall heavier workload shape our daily lives. It’s no surprise that the joy of farming sometimes takes a back seat.

This is exactly where MooHero’s herd monitoring has provided enormous relief for me.

Since I started working with MooHero, fertility management has become much easier to handle. Every heat cycle is automatically detected and documented — and I receive a notification in time. This ensures that I inseminate the cows at the optimal moment.

In the past, especially during the summer months, I often missed heats. High temperatures reduce heat behavior, and during this period I also spend many hours on the tractor doing fieldwork instead of being in the barn. Today, thanks to MooHero, I no longer miss any heat cycles.

Keeping Animal Health in View at All Times

Today, I also have much better control over the health of every individual cow. The sensor data alerts me immediately whenever irregularities occur — whether due to feeding errors, lameness, or the onset of mastitis.

With MooHero, I can detect problems early and react quickly, often before a veterinarian is even needed. This promotes animal health, reduces the use of medication, and prevents losses in milk production.

Insemination Index of 1.5 Confirms the Success

A clear indication of the system’s effectiveness is my current insemination index of 1.5. Every additional insemination means higher costs, more work, and often extends the calving interval. Especially with our Simmental cows, excessively long lactation periods combined with declining milk yield can quickly lead to overconditioning — and that practically guarantees problems in the following lactation.

Thanks to precise heat monitoring and perfectly timed insemination, I am able to get the cows pregnant faster and significantly reduce these follow-up risks.

Improving Profitability and Work Organization

Another advantage: the profitability of my farm has improved noticeably. Health problems detected early, better fertility, and fewer inseminations all have a direct positive impact on herd performance and the farm’s cost structure.

Documentation is no longer a time-consuming task either. Manual record-keeping of heat calendars has been completely eliminated — everything is automatically recorded and clearly displayed. For me, this is not a luxury, but meaningful digitalization that makes my farm more efficient, enables professional herd management, and sustainably improves the health of my animals at the same time.
